SIREN

ENCHANTRESS OF THE DEEP

Off the granite coast, where lighthouses blink through endless fog, her voice drifts over the black water. Fishermen from Gloucester to Bar Harbor have followed that song, their boats found empty and adrift among the shoals.

Coast Guard Incident Report
June 4, 2016 - Plum Island, Massachusetts

Brothers, Bruce and Barry Doyle of Newburyport, MA were fishing on jetty where the Merrimack River meets the Atlantic. during the evening last night. Both stated they had been returning to the site regularly since childhood.

Weather conditions were stable. Visibility was clear. No marine advisories were in effect.

At approximately 9:40 PM, both individuals reported hearing a voice from the water. The voice was described as female and positioned beyond the end of the jetty. No vessel or swimmer was visible at the time of the call.

Barry moved toward the edge of the structure with the stated intent of entering the water. Bruce intervened before entry was made. Both individuals reported a visual disturbance at the surface immediately following the call. Descriptions are consistent in outline but not in detail. Each described a humanoid form at the upper body, with a wide tail structure inconsistent with known marine life. The form submerged without splash or wake and disappeared.

No further vocalizations were reported. The two men reported no physical injuries but mentioned a sense of disorientation and a feeling of personal loss.

Local authorities, including deployed Coast Guard and state police, conducted a search of the surrounding water. No individual in distress was located. No body was recovered. No evidence of the incident at jetty was identified.

Both individuals referenced a prior incident associated with the same structure, recalled from childhood, involving their father falling into the water under similarly reported circumstances. No formal record of that event has been located at this time.

No environmental hazard has been identified.
It is assumed the creature the Doyle men witnessed was a misclassified river dolphin.

This case is considered closed.
